Matchplay Championship hits new heights

Record numbers of golfers have signed up to this year's Matchplay Championship - making it the biggest event in the competition's history.
The championship, now in it's seventh year, will see more than 2200 golfers from across the UK & Ireland battle it out for a place in the prestigious grand final, which will be held once again at the luxurious Marriot Taba Heights Beach Resort in Egypt.
Such is the increasing popularity of the championship, numbers have increased by almost 40 per cent on last year's figures meaning more than 1100 pairs will be competing.
Pairs from across the country will play a series of knockout matchplay rounds against other pairs from their own areas before progressing to a regional final at a prestigious UK venue.
Following the regional finals, 16 pairs of golfers - men's pairs and mixed pairs - will qualify for the week-long expenses-paid trip to Egypt for the grand final.
The championship costs just £20 per person to enter and the first round matches are now already underway.
The event was won last year by teenage golfers James Lighfoot and Michael Brockbank from Cheshire.
